How long is the whole program?

Typically any given program will last between two-and-a-half and three hours. This is made up of 5 – 8 short films, between 5 minutes and 50 minutes long, with an intermission half way through.

What if I'm late?

The VIMFF Tour is organized by volunteers who want to watch the films as well. Once the films start we lock the front doors, so try not to be late! However we try to have a person keeping their eye on the front from time to time.

Seating is on a first-come-first-serve basis, and people usually start lining up outside the theatre 30 minutes before the doors open – so get there early!

about us

Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival

Driven by a passion for film, culture, and the outdoors, the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival (VIMFF) Society seeks to advance appreciation of films and film-making while inspiring, informing, and educating the public in these areas.
VIMFF achieves its aim by producing film festivals and photo exhibits, and providing a forum for film-makers and photographers to present and discuss their works. Its instructional seminars on films, film-making, and photography provide further education for those seeking to develop their skills.
By presenting unique outdoor and mountaineering films that illustrate experiences and cultures from all corners of the globe, VIMFF brings communities together to promote positive values and active lifestyles.
The Society is aligned with the philosophy of the North Vancouver municipalities to promote, both locally and internationally, the natural beauty of North Vancouver and its status as one of the best places to visit and live – a place where nature and culture meet.

We’re one of about a dozen regional sections that make up the Alpine Club of Canada, Canada’s national climbing and mountaineering organization. Our members climb cliffs, frozen waterfalls and mountains, they ski back-country, cross-country or downhill, hike and generally enjoy the more vertical aspects of nature. Here are some of the reasons why you might want to join the Toronto Section:

  • Participate in club activities, ranging from rock-climbing days at local crags to mountaineering expeditions. In the winter, section trips explore the many ice-climbing and back-country ski areas within a day’s drive of Toronto. Many climbers learn through participation in section trips and gain the ability needed to go out on their own.
  • Special nights at local climbing gyms and social get-togethers are also amongst the section’s offerings.
  • Benefit from members’ rates at our cabin (including boat service) at Bon Echo, where a granite cliff 100m high and almost 2km long rises out of the water at Lake Mazinaw.
  • Benefit from members’ rates at the Montreal Section’s cabin in the Adirondacks.
  • Enjoy our quarterly newsletter.
  • Support our Access Committee, which is working to maintain good relationships with land-owners and preserve climbing rights throughout Southern Ontario.

As a member of Toronto Section, you’ll automatically become a member of the national club, the Alpine Club of Canada. Here are some of the benefits of this:

  • Participation in the National Club’s ski and climbing camps in western Canada
  • The National Club’s quarterly newsletter
  • Liability insurance for club events
  • Members’ rates at the club’s hostel in Lake Louise
  • UIAA affiliation
  • The annual Canadian Alpine Journal, one of the world’s best alpine journals, at preferential rates
  • As an option, advance booking privileges and members’ rates at the hut system out west, including the Canmore clubhouse.

How to Join Us

To join the Toronto Section of the Alpine Club of Canada, you must join the National Club. The Alpine Club of Canada’s application form will ask which section of the club you wish to be affiliated.

If you would like further information, please contact the Toronto Section’s membership coordinator, at membership@alpineclubtoronto.ca. You will also find more information on membership at the National Club website.

The Alpine Club of Canada has 28 alpine huts and 20 regional club sections across Canada. We offer mountain adventures throughout the country and around the world. We publish books and journals related to mountain culture. We provide support for access and environmental issues, an avenue into competition climbing, financial grants that support a variety of mountaineering-related projects and much more.

Want to meet other backcountry enthusiasts? Our 20 local “Sections” from Vancouver Island to Montreal are the heart and soul of the Club. The Sections offer Club trips every weekend, interspersed with backcountry courses for beginners through experts. Whether you are a hiker, backcountry skier, snowshoer, ice climber, rock climber or mountaineer, the ACC has an activity for you.

The Banff Mountain Festival World Tour brings Banff to audiences around the globe. Immediately after the Festival ends in November, a selection of the best films go on tour across Canada, the United States, and internationally from Scotland to South Africa to China, Japan, New Zealand, Antarctica, and points in between. Each year, the films travel to 30 countries reaching more than 210,000 people at over 550 screenings.

Host organizations in each tour location choose a program that reflects the interests of their local audiences from a selection of films on exploration and adventure, culture and environment, and mountain sports.

The proceeds of many tour screenings benefit a local outdoor program, community cause, or a non-profit such as youth adventure and outdoor pursuit programs, search and rescue operations, climbing clubs, adaptive sport programs, conservation groups, and trail maintenance organizations.
